Favorite Thrifting Haunts Part 1

I live in the Metro Detroit area and we are certainly blessed with some damn fine thrift stores. It's going to take me a few posts to list them all, along with all their pros/cons. I will try not to bore you to tears.

1. Value World - located on Central City Parkway in Westland (across from Westland Mall).
Pros - HUGE selection of big name brands. Value World has probably the cheapest prices around. PLUS they send out 50% off your entire purchase coupons and other coupon goodies if you go online and subscribe to the newsletter. Make sure to check the white board at the front of the store for the current day's sale.
Cons - No dressing rooms to try on, so you take a chance when you purchase. Plan on wearing a tank top under your shirt. At least this way you can try on shirts/jackets. Another check mark against them is that the store is quite large and can seem fairly daunting to tackle.

2. Salvation Army - locaded on Morton Taylor and Joy Rd. (I think...)
Pros - You can't beat the goodies offered. Like Value World, check out the white board for the daily sales. They offer 50% off your entire purchase sales on most holidays that they are open (4th of July, Memorial Day, etc.). They also have dressing rooms, which kicks ass.
Cons - They aren't open on Sundays and their prices can be a little steep.

Plato's Closet - I go to the on Ford Rd. in Canton
Pros - Quality stuff. Plato's purchases items off of people who are looking to sell their clothes and they in turn sell the clothes. They will only purchase certain items and they have to be in good condition. Think upper scale to Value Workld or Salvation Army, where all the clothes are given to them as donation to sell. I search for the 50% off sale tags. You can also belong to their rewards program. After you spend a certain amount there, they will give you a 20% off entire purchase coupon. They have dressing rooms, which again, kicks ass.
Cons - Better quality items means more expensive. They cater more towards the younger crowd, so don't expect to find business wear there.

Picture time!!!!!
Tshirt - Value World find, with coupon $2
Cardigan - Clearance sale find at some some boutiquey shop. Bought it 13 years ago (?) Less than $10
Camo Pants - Old Navy Clearance, bought a few years ago, under $10
Converse - Stolen from my 15 year old son (okay, more like he outgrew them. Hand me downs are the bomb diggity.)

Jacket - Another Old Navy clearance find, 3 years old, under $15
Tshirt - It a J Crew Salvation Army find, $1.50
Jeans - Value World, Apt. 9 - $2.50
Shoes - Sketchers, at least 6 years old. No clue where I bought them (As you will find, I tend to hold onto shoes and clothes.)

Alrighty then! Make sure to follow me on Facebook @Funklicious Thrifting. Seriously, the outtake photos I share are hilarious. My 10 year old daughter would appreciate the nod to her awesome photography skills!

What in the world?!

Don't you just love it when someone starts a blog and then doesn't post for months on end?!?! (crickets chirping) What can I say? Life. It happens. Kids get busy. Work gets insane. You stop folding clean clothes until 3 weeks pile up in baskets and overtakes your family room. I'm still thrifty crazy as ever. Opened a Poshmark shop,  https://poshmark.com/closet/funklicious . (Seriously, go check it out. I have good taste!) Last post was all about my favorite thrift haunts. I thought it might be beneficial to go over some good guidelines to keep in mind when you go thrifting (if you are new to the thrifting game). 1. Bring friends. It's a bitchin' time to get some of your peeps together and search for buried treasure in thrift stores. Trust me on this. 2. Research your thrift stores first and check out their sale schedule. What colored tags are marked down? When is Ladies' Night? What days are 50% off (BEST DAY EVER)? 3. Don't go in with a specif...

So? Why Thrifting?

Let me just start out by saying that I LOVE clothes. LOVE. However, I don't give a rat's patoot about fashion. I just like what I like. What I don't like is paying full price for anything. Pretty sure my soul is a cheapskate. Therefore I thrift and I can thrift like a crazy woman. (In fact, I do thrift like a crazy woman.) I recently lost quite a bit of weight and needed to replace most of my too large wardrobe. I still am planning on losing another 15-20 pounds and dropping money on clothes when I'm going to need more is not happening. I figured why the hell not share my thrifting scores and clearance sale finds. Plus, I plan on sharing thrifting advice/ skills and perhaps sharing an upcycled project or two. (I also happen to cuss a bit like a sailor. Fine, a LOT like a sailor. I will send out a blanket apology now if that offends you.) Reasons to thrift in no particular order: SAVING MONEY! Who the heck doesn't like saving money? It's the thrill of the h...
